David Barrett & Band

Marko Jovanovic & Band

Alex Rossi & Band

Saturday's concert presents three world class harmonica artists with widely differing backgrounds, performing in a blues context. Alongside his groundbreaking work as a blues harmonica educator, David Barrett is one of the leading exponents of West Coast blues harp, with beautiful tone and seemingly effortless mastery of the nuances of the genre. In addition, he will be hosting the grand finale which closes the Saturday night show, where all instructors appear on stage with the band to finish the event together.

Marko Jovanovic is another great contemporary blues player, but his musical background is broader and also encompasses influences from the Balkans, West Africa and Spain. A seasoned live performer, he is one of the finest European players of his generation. For his concert appearance at the Harmonica Masters Workshops 2016, Marko Jovanovic will be joined by American guitarist and singer Ryan Donohue. Ryan hails from New Orleans, where he has performed with many rising stars of the post-Katrina street music scene in the Crescent City. He is best known in Europe for his work with the Crazy Hambones, Peter Crow C. and Bill Barrett. Under the name "Little Sam Lud", Marko Jovanovic and Ryan Donohue mix contemporary acoustic blues with influences from a variety of world music styles to create an exciting and entertaining fusion all of their own.

Last-minute change in Concert Program, Saturday, November 5th!
Due to an unexpected offer to stand in for the legendary Stevie Wonder, accompanying soul queen Chaka Khan for a series of concerts in Belgium and the Netherlands, Antonio Serrano will have to leave Trossingen on the afternoon of Saturday November 5th. This means he will be unable to perform at the Harmonica Masters Concert that evening. Antonio offers his sincere apologies and hopes that everyone will understand his decision. In order to give people a chance to hear him perform, we have arranged a short showcase appearance during the session after the concert on Friday night.
Antonio's friend and colleague, Brazilian harmonica maestro Alex Rossi, has kindly agreed to perform in his stead at the concert on Saturday. A pioneer of the South American blues circuit, Rossi has performed and recorded with numerous blues legends including Sam Myers, Magic Slim, Hubert Sumlin, Joshua Redman, Susan Tedeschi, Phil Guy, Jeff Healey and many more. Unusually, Alex is also an accomplished jazz chromatic player. He recently produced and performed on a CD tribute to the late, great Toots Thielemans with five other world class jazz chromatic harmonica artists including Gregoire Maret, Olivier Ker Ourio and Antonio Serrano. He can also be heard on the soundtrack to the recent award winning movie Nono The Zig Zag Kid, starring Isabella Rosellini and recently released a CD of compositions by Tom Jobim.

This concert offers a rare opportunity to experience him in an intimate club situation with a top class blues band:

Kai Strauss  -  guitar & vocals
Thomas "Gaz" Brodbeck  -  bass & vocals
Christian Rannenberg  -  piano & vocals
Bernhard Egger  -  drums

The Band:

Kai Strauss (guitar)

Kai Strauss belongs to the select circle of European musicians granted peer group recognition as authentic blues players by American colleagues and music critics. Kai toured for over 15 years with Texan heavyweight Memo Gonzales and his intense, compelling style has won him a place in the hearts of blues lovers from Hamburg to Chicago. The guitarist and singer turned solo in 2011 and has since established himself as a force to be reckoned with on the European blues scene. Strauss' current Album "I Go By Feel" clearly confirms his well-earned international status as a blues guitarist of the first order. It also shows him as a convincing singer and songwriter with a deep feeling for dynamic and timeless blues.

Gaz (bass)

Singer, guitarist and bassist Gaz has been performing on stage since the age of 14 and has earned a well deserved reputation as a musical all-rounder of the first water, with a expressive and soulful voice which has become his trademark. With his 9-piece rhythm & blues band Dr Mablues he has appeared several times at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival, and has been a frequent visitor to Trossingen, both with the cult trio Opportunity, or "just" as the bass player, accompanying the crème de la crème of the harmonica world. In the course of his musical career, Gaz has opened for numerous top acts including Joe Cocker, David-Clayton Thomas, Wilson Pickett, Isaac Hayes, Joan Armatrading, Little Feat or the Commodores.

Chris Rannenberg (piano)

We're happy that we've been able to engage pianist Christian Rannenberg again in 2016 to accompany the sessions and concerts. One of the most highly regarded European blues pianists, for the past 30 years he has worked with an emormous range of international artists and has become an audience favorite in Trossingen. Together with Eric Noden, Chris will accompany the Onstage Sessions in the Kesselhaus and will also perform with the band on both evening concerts.

Bernhard Egger (drums)

Master drummer Bernhard Egger originally hails from the Waldviertel in Austria. During the past 25 years, he has accompanied countless formations in widely varying styles, performed over 2300 concerts in 24 countries and played on 18 CD productions. After turning pro in 2002, he worked (among others) with Hans Theesink, The Mojo Bluesband and B.B. & the Blues Shacks, spending 8 years with Germany's popular blues export. In 2011 he co-founded the talk series Auf Dem Roten Stuhl ("On the red chair"). Over the past 5 years, the Youtube channel has become one of the biggest German language platforms broadcasting interviews with figures from the cultural scene.
