Harp and Health with Quim Roca
The way we breathe is the way we live. But how do we breathe when we play? The way we approach our instrument can tell us a great deal about ourselves. By focussing on awareness of our breathing when playing harmonica, we can gain insights into our physical and emotional issues, reduce our stress and anxiety levels and even turn the act of playing into an exercise in mindfulness. Or should we call it harpfulness?

Conscious Breathing with Quim Roca
Gaining consciousness of your breathing helps you keep your mind in the present and allows you to develop your own resources to deal with stress, anxiety and all manner of physical and emotional issues. The harmonica, being a great amplifier of your breath, is the perfect tool to explore your diaphragm and learn to improve lung capacity and control of your breathing. This workshop is not about learning how to play the harmonica, but about how playing harmonica can help you connect more deeply with your breathing.

"How the Harp Met the Blues" |
|
Herbert Quelle, the retired German Consul General from Chicago, musician and author, gives an entertaining and informative talk (in German) about the role of the harmonica in German-American relations. His books „Monika‘s Blues“ and „Kein falscher Zungenschlag: Black Music Matters“ put the instrument in the context of economic and social transatlantic developments over two centuries. |
