Requirements for participants

  • Technical level: This workshop is designed for harmonica players with a slightly advanced, medium technical level. No prior experience in jazz improvisation is required.
  • Language: English and German

 

Workshop Goal: The Jazz Chromatic Harmonica Mastery workshop aims to empower participants to delve into the captivating world of jazz improvisation with confidence and minimal reliance on complex music theory. By focusing on practical techniques and easy-to-understand concepts, participants will gain the tools needed to create soulful and expressive jazz improvisations.


 

Key Concepts:

a) Theme Analysis and Interpretation:

Participants will learn the art of analyzing jazz standards' themes to discover essential notes for improvisation. Through guided instruction, they will explore how to use these key notes as a foundation for their improvisational journeys. Techniques for crafting thematic variations and drawing inspiration from vocal interpretations will be demonstrated, enriching their improvisational palette.

 

b) Rhythmic Mastery:

This segment of the workshop will delve into the rhythmic intricacies of jazz improvisation. Participants will explore various rhythmic patterns, including whole notes, half notes, eighth notes, and triplets. By using a minimal number of notes, students will learn to infuse their improvisations with diverse and captivating rhythms, enhancing their expressiveness.

 

Inspiration from Jazz Masters:

Throughout the workshop, participants will gain inspiration from influential jazz  albums that align with the workshop concepts. By studying the works of accomplished artists, participants will better comprehend the essence of jazz improvisation and apply these insights to their own musical expression.


 

Interactive Learning:

The workshop will feature interactive exercises with playback, allowing participants to apply the concepts immediately. These engaging activities will provide students with valuable hands-on experience, fostering a deeper understanding of jazz improvisation and instilling confidence in their playing.


 

Jazz Standards Selection:

The workshop will focus on popular jazz standards such as "All of Me," "Autumn Leaves," "C Jam Blues," "Blue Bossa," and "Georgia on My Mind." These timeless classics will serve as the canvas for participants to unleash their creativity and refine their improvisational skills.
